Background

UTS has produced a three-minute video titled "Escape From UTS", designed to show students how to evacuate a UTS building in the event of fire or other emergency. We are seeking your assistance in showing the video to your students as soon as possible. This will help you and UTS meet your duty of care in an emergency.

What you need to do

The video has been loaded onto the new lecterns and can be played by simply clicking on the icon. The specific instructions to show "Escape From UTS" from the lecterns are:

  1. Log-on to the lectern using your UTS email user ID and password.
  2. Select local PC/Computer from the Lectern User Control. The screen should lower automatically when you do this.
  3. Set the volume on the wall panel to halfway using the "up" arrow.
  4. Turn out the lights using either the desktop or wall panel controls.
  5. Double click on the "Escape From UTS" icon 'Escape From UTS' icon and the DVD should start automatically - if not, select the "play" arrow.
  6. Expand the image to full screen size by clicking on the "maximise" icon (the box icon) in the top-right corner of the DVD screen. Make sure the cursor is off the screen.
  7. When the DVD is finished, right click the mouse and select "exit" (the "stop" and "replay" controls are located here as well).

To prepare

In preparation, it would be useful if you:

  • Noted the location of the emergency exit closest to your lecture – just look for the green exit signs; and
  • Have a look at the “Emergency Procedures” poster on the wall outside your lecture/tutorial room. This also shows the evacuation assembly area.
  • Introduce the video as one of UTS’s safety initiatives for students that shows them how to get safely out of a building in the rare event of fire or other emergency.

Remember that you may be called upon to direct students in the event of a fire alarm, particularly for evening/weekend classes.

What if the students have questions?

Refer them to the Emergency Procedures poster which should answer their questions about evacuation. Alternatively, Security staff will be able to help.

What should I do if there is a fire or other emergency?

If there is a fire or other emergency whilst you are teaching, your role would be to:

  • Inform Security if you discover or suspect a fire or other emergency (from internal phones dial 6 for UTS Security or 0000 for Emergency Services).
  • Advise the students to evacuate if and when directed by the alarm system.
  • Show them to the nearest exit.
  • Try to ensure all the students evacuate. You may need to delegate someone to check toilets or break-out rooms.
  • If one of your students is mobility-impaired, arrange to have them move onto the fire stairs after the other students and wait on the landing with an escort (they should be safe on the fire stairs for several hours). Inform Security or the Fire Brigade of their location so they can arrange for their safe evacuation.
