FMU wins $1.5 million from the NSW Green Business Program, who recognise the contributions UTS are making to tackle Climate Change.
As part of the NSW Climate Change fund, FMU have been supported with a $1.5 million grant to carry out two projects on the city campus that will potentially save 55 million litres of water each year.
Cooling towers are used to reject heat from the centralised cooling plant. They are located on the roofs of the Tower Building and Building 10 in the City Campus and are the largest consumers of water in the University - using around 200,000 litres of fresh water a day in the hottest days of summer.
As a result of this innovative project FMU will be tapping into Sydney Water's street sewer system to use treated recycled water complying with NSW Health standards to operate the cooling tower system.
In addition, the Cooling towers also currently discharge on average approximately 28, 000 litres of "bleed water" per day. It is proposed to treat and reuse this "bleed water" on toilet flushing systems within the University's buildings.
Facilities Management Unit encourages any interested party to contact Eric Liyanage of the Building Services Branch, for any further information, as we continue to prove that anything is possible if we think green, change, and do.
